Back to the roots

Dear guests of the Hotel Città di Parenzo,

here we are back with our usual column on the most important events of the month in our wonderful Trieste!

For the month of February we have a big surprise for you: after nine very long years of absence, the historic Opicina Tram, one of the symbols par excellence of the Julian capital, has finally returned! This approximately 5 km long line, unique in the whole of Europe, has the characteristic feature of having almost a kilometre of steeply sloping ground along which the cars are pushed upwards (or held downwards) by a special funicular system. Its route runs entirely within the municipal territory and connects the city centre to Villa Opicina, one of Trieste’s main hamlets on the Karst plateau. It was inaugurated on 9 September 1902 and, although in alternating phases due to suspensions and renovation work, it has been one of the most characteristic elements of everyday life in Trieste for over a century.

For those of you who would like to climb aboard and enjoy the ride on the tramway, Trieste Trasporti has published all the useful details, given below.

The journey time is about 30 minutes each way, and offers travellers the opportunity to admire the city from above and pass through some of the most striking views of the Trieste Karst. Tram Line 2 follows the traditional route, with intermediate stops at the most characteristic points along the way: Opicina (Train Station) Via Nazionale Campo Romano Obelisco Banne Conconello Cologna (small church) Cologna (sports field) Vetta Scorcola Via Romagna Sant’Anastasio Piazza Casali Piazza Dalmazia

Travellers boarding the tram will not find mechanical obliterating machines, but the electronic model that every other bus line in the city is equipped with. The ticket, therefore, will no longer have to be stamped but validated by approaching the Qr code on the ticket itself, waiting for the green light and subsequent confirmation of validation. It will still be possible to purchase the ticket on board in contactless mode by approaching the ticket machine with your credit card or smartphone. The classic ticket can be purchased at any newsstand or point of sale, with the following fares: €1.50 for 60 minutes, €1.85 for 75 minutes.
