OCTOBER IN TRIESTE: NOT JUST BARCOLANA!

Dear guests of the Hotel Città di Parenzo,

As usual, here is our monthly section on the main events, celebrations and appointments scheduled in our beautiful Trieste.

In October, as we all know, the city’s attention is naturally focused on Barcolana, the most important event of all the celebrations in the Julian capital. This year, however, we thought we would focus on other events, both directly and indirectly related to the famous sailing race.

The first event worth mentioning is the exhibition dedicated to J.R. Tolkien: entitled TOLKIEN. Man, Professor, Author, it recounts the personal and academic journey of the man who gave humanity literary masterpieces such as The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The exhibition of paintings, memorabilia and photographs will allow visitors to delve into the depths of Tolkien’s universe and discover the narrative power and poetic force that characterised the creative process of the illustrious British writer. The exhibition has been set up in the evocative Salone degli Incanti, and the full ticket price is £10 (for further information on discounts and reductions, please consult the official website of the Salone: https://salonedeglincanti.online.trieste.it/tolkien-uomo-professore-autore/).

Another noteworthy event, this time themed around Barcolana, is the exhibition Amare il Mare (Love the Sea), which will open its doors on Saturday 4 October at 6 pm. Once again, the location is exceptional: the Galleria Rettori Tribbio. This exhibition, which is officially part of the Barcolana events calendar, is now in its ninth year and features local artists as well as artists from outside the region and abroad. There will be marine-themed works as well as expressionist, symbolist and surrealist pieces, which will transport visitors into the multifaceted world of the sea, full of secrets waiting to be discovered.

Finally, this section also features another interesting exhibition indirectly linked to Barcolana: Il Mare che unisce (The Sea that Connects), organised by the University of Trieste in collaboration with the Italian Association of Ancient Cartography Collectors ‘Roberto Almagià’ in Rome and the University of Zadar. Thousands of nautical documents from different periods will be on display in Magazzino 26 (Porto Vecchio, Leonor Fini room), together with ancient nautical charts belonging to private collectors. The charts on display have been produced and processed by various cartographic centres, each using different methodologies, but with a single common subject: the Adriatic Sea, one of the most vital areas of the Mediterranean given the vast number of lands and peoples that have been reflected in its waves for centuries. These nautical charts weave together the physical and the symbolic, creating a reality that encompasses concrete geographies and imaginary spaces, becoming fertile ground for the exchange of ideas and cultures. Cartography thus becomes a bridge between science, geography, art, economics and sociology, becoming a discipline capable of shaping the social and economic life of communities.

And you? If you want to broaden your horizons and discover all the events connected to the Barcolana in our wonderful city, don’t hesitate to ask our staff for information: we will be happy to advise you!
